First Steps In Screenwriting with Jeremy Sheldon
"We need a spark, we need some place to start - we need something really small. Small is good. Something small and very, very specific." Tony Gilroy
This six-session introduction to screenwriting guides participants through the development and completion of a 4-page short script. The programme focuses on cinematic storytelling, strong character writing and clear dramatic structure. Through practical exercises, focused teaching and interactive workshops, participants learn how to shape behaviour into story and translate ideas into concise, screen-ready writing.
Session 1: Character and Change
This session explores the idea that stories are built around how characters change in the face of threat. Participants define a central desire, identify internal contradiction and explore the pattern that drives conflict. Through guided exercises and discussion, each participant develops a character whose way of being naturally generates dramatic momentum.
Session 2: Plot and Dramatic Structure
Participants are introduced to core principles of dramatic structure as applied to short film. The session focuses on escalation, turning points and decisive choice. By mapping key beats, participants clarify how their character is challenged and how the story builds towards climax and possible meaningful change.
Session 3: Outlining and Cinematic Writing
This session translates ideas into practical craft. Participants shape a concise outline and explore screenplay format and scene construction. Emphasis is placed on visual storytelling, objective-driven scenes and expressing emotion through action rather than explanation.
Session 4: Dialogue and Subtext
Dialogue is explored as action and conflict rather than conversation. Participants examine subtext, tension and silence, learning how speech reveals character while advancing story. Exercises focus on sharpening exchanges and reducing exposition to create purposeful, dynamic scenes.
Sessions 5 and 6: Creative Workshop and Script Development
Participants bring draft material into an interactive workshop where the other participants have read the work in advance. The material won’t be read out, but through guided discussion and targeted editorial exercises, scripts will be tested for clarity of character, escalation and emotional impact. The focus is on strengthening structure, refining key moments and identifying practical next steps for revision.

There's a particular kind of bravery in early scripts. Writers who haven't learned what they're 'supposed' to do will reach for instincts more seasoned hands would talk themselves out of, and part of my job is protecting that while we build the craft around it. Shorts are the ideal proving ground: every choice declares itself, and a good workshop will spot the missing beat, the line doing too much work or the ending the writer hasn't quite committed to yet.
